Cabin 4 has since doubled in size and now has all modern amenities.) Staying in The Field Cabin is not like living in a house or a hotel room or even a glamping tent. It is like living in the wild, except you are encased in high-efficiency insulated walls with giant low-energy windows—and sleeping on a comfortable queen-size bed with organic percale linens and a Nectar mattress. We provide La Colombe coffee service. You can watch shooting stars from bed or the wood-fired hot tub. You will likely see a family of deer wandering through the woods while you make coffee or hear our resident owls hooting at night. Our cabins are not like other tiny home compounds in the area that have dozens of units set 10 feet away from one another. The Forest Cabin sits on its own stunning 5-acre parcel in the middle of an old-growth forest, slate ledges, streams and wildlife. Our cabins offer the lowest carbon footprint of any rental in the Hudson Valley. Powered by a large solar array on an adjacent parcel, these up-cycled shipping container homes use minimal water, firewood, and electricity—bringing you even closer to nature. You will not find high-flow waterfall showers or electric baseboard heat in these cabins. What you will find is an incredibly comfy bed looking directly at the forest and the flanks of 3,655-foot Kaaterskill High Peak, a deck with lounge chairs, a side table for cocktails, a hand built fire ring with Adirondack chairs set around it, an outdoor picnic table, hammock, paths, and spring-fed stream. The hot tub is set on the deck and fits two comfortably. No smoking inside, plenty of room to smoke around the campfire outside... The bathroom has a shower, vanity, mirror, light, and compost toilet (works pretty much like a regular toilet). The Finnish wet sauna is a 5 minute walk away. (You can book multiple 120-minute private sessions, no extra charge.) Parking is 10 feet away. No smoking inside, plenty of room to smoke around the campfire outside... We use small, high-efficiency electric water heaters, a propane furnace, wood stove, and firewood cut and seasoned on the property for heat. You get most of the comforts of home, but with a drastically smaller footprint—all of which lowers the barrier between you and the gorgeous natural setting just outside the front door. If it's cold outside (with the direct vent propane heater and wood stove it's always warm inside) we use the wood-fired Finnish sauna — located a five-minute walk from all four cabins — and lounge around drinking coffee. (Book multiple 120-minute private sauna sessions, no extra charge.) If it's warm, we leave the cabin's three sliding glass doors open and lounge around the patio. (Lots of lounging...) There is wifi, a propane cooktop, and enough pots/pans/basics to cook whatever you want. There is a small refrigerator w/freezer and a cooler for your ice and drinks. (Yes, we have a coffee grinder.) The heater is easy to use and super warm. Set the temp and forget it... The wood stove stays warm all night too. In the summer, A/C keeps the container cool. Staying in the cabin is an experience, not a simple overnight. There is something very special about it and this property. You won't want to go to sleep while watching shooting stars from the deck on a summer night. On a 20-degree afternoon in the middle of a blizzard, it is 80 degrees and silent inside. More than a dozen guests have gotten engaged here. (All said "yes!") Another guest chopped his bundle of wood into 1,000 toothpick-sized pieces thinking that the fire would burn longer and hotter that way. (It does not.) There are streams and cliffs and tons of wildlife on the property. Owls and red-shouldered hawks glide above the cabin, as well as fireflies in the summer. Deer graze in the field and woods and eagles visit now and then. This place was built for two, but it can fit four. Two adults and two kids is perfect. Larger groups can inquire about our other cabins. (Click on our logo to see them all.) There is 2 bars of LTE cell service across the property - and wifi in the cabin is 350mbps. The other cabins on the property are out of sight. Each has its own driveway and plenty of private space to walk around. (We designed it that way.) Saugerties is a gem. Miss Lucy's (dinner), Circle W General Store (breakfast/lunch), Gracies Luncheonette (breakfast), and Phos, Silvia, Good Night, or Red Onion (fancy dinner!). Walking to the lighthouse is a must, as is hiking to Kaaterskill Falls, Huckleberry Point and North and South Lakes. Skiing at Hunter Mountain is also 30 minutes away. Food shopping and farm stands are 10-15 min away.

Other Details to Note

Firewood is available for purchase on the driveway. (Save your firewood for the wood stove inside; use wood from the forest for the campfire.) The new bathroom is indoors with a shower, vanity, mirror, light, and compost toilet. The Finnish wet sauna is a 5 minute walk away. (You can book multiple 120-minute private sessions, no extra charge.) Built in a 10-foot shipping container with a genuine Harvia Finnish sauna stove, it's pretty incredible. Shower and benches inside...

House Rules

No shoes in the house, please. AND... We ask guests to communicate clearly if they are comfortable in an off-grid environment. This might mean splitting wood, starting a fire, heating water to shower with, getting creative with luggage storage, living in a small space, walking through the woods at night, walking outside to go to the bathroom, fixing something that breaks, etc... We try to be as forthright as possible about this amazing property and cabin: It is a luxurious micro-pod smack in the middle of the wilderness. It's a real drag when someone asks, "Where the hell is the refrigerator!" Or "There's no TV?!" Or “How do you turn the wood stove on?” So the rule is, please understand what you are getting into before you book, and prepare with warm clothes, a multi-tool, a headlamp, a lighter and a good pair of boots.
